Our Ethos
At Victoria House we believe every child deserves a safe, nurturing and caring home where they can build genuine, purposeful relationships with adults who offer support, advice and encouragement. We aim to feel as close to an ordinary family home as possible, and we treat each child as a unique individual who is valued, trusted and given every chance to grow.
We provide structure through daily routines, shared activities and one-to-one time with a key worker, and we encourage children to lead healthy, active lives. Positive behaviour is celebrated, and when things are difficult we focus on understanding and restorative approaches rather than simply imposing sanctions. Guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, we hold high expectations and an unshakeable belief in every child’s potential and worth.
Location & Local Amenities
Victoria House sits in a quiet residential village in Kent, close to a café, shop, restaurant and take-aways within walking distance or a short drive.
Getting around — Staff have use of a vehicle, there’s a bus stop nearby with services to the historic city of Canterbury, and the closest train station offers direct links to London.
Health — GP surgeries, pharmacies, dentists and a hospital with A&E are all a short drive away, and children’s mental health services in Canterbury are around twenty minutes away.
Education — At the point of referral we work with the placing authority to find the most suitable education for each child, drawing on good links with a range of mainstream and special schools in the area.
Things to do — Nearby options include a youth club, cadets, cubs and scouts, a public pool, cinema, forest school and local parks, plus clubs for football, dance, horse riding, drama and gymnastics. We actively encourage children to take part, helping them feel part of the community and build confidence.
Care & Safeguarding
The welfare of every child is our paramount concern, and it guides everything we do. Each child has an individual plan, rigorous risk assessments and a safeguarding plan, and we take a multi-agency approach — working closely with placing authorities, the LADO and other professionals to keep children safe.
All of our staff are recruited under safer recruitment guidelines, including enhanced DBS checks, and every team member is trained in safeguarding — refreshed at least annually — and in Team Teach de-escalation and physical intervention skills. Children are always listened to and involved in the decisions that affect them, and can raise any concern with their key worker, the Registered Manager, an advocate or their social worker.
